The following sources were used in the design and development stages of the dictionary. Construction terms from all these sources were merged into a large master database that initially yielded a total of 4,969 words. The terms were reviewed carefully, duplicates were eliminated, and questionable words were pilot tested for usage and translation accuracy with Hispanic members of Laborers’ Local 175 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Formatting and design issues were also pilot tested in a total of 6 focus group sessions. Finally, by using the database of the Spanish Real Academy of Language, brief definitions were added for those dubious or vague terms. In general, use of synonyms were used considering the different terminology that varies from country to country in Latin America. With over 2,000 construction terms, our final product aims to serve as the first SPANISH-ENGLISH dictionary for Hispanic construction workers made according to worker specifications.
