We have put a lot of time and effort into building this dictionary—the first Spanish-English dictionary for Hispanic construction workers designed according to worker specifications. Terms were collected from seven varied sources and entered into a master database. Initially, this yielded a total of 4,969 words. The terms were reviewed carefully, duplicates were eliminated and questionable words were pilot-tested for usage and translation accuracy. The materials was tested on Hispanic members of Laborers’ Local 175 (Lawrence, Massachusetts), construction laborers who represent our target audience. Formatting and design issues were also pilot-tested in six focus group sessions.
